MAIN CONDITION IN MOTHER

Perinatal deaths differ from general deaths because a condition may be reported in the record for the fetus/infant, the mother, or for both.

A maternal condition was reported in 1,063 (41.6%) of the 2,558 perinatal deaths registered in 2012, compared to 1100 (43.1% ) of the 2,553 perinatal deaths registered in 2011.

In 2012, Fetus and newborn affected by complications of placenta, cord and membranes (P02) was the most frequently reported maternal cause, accounting for 367 or 14.3% of perinatal deaths, a slight increase of 1.4% from the 2011 count of 362.

Fetus and newborn affected by maternal complications of pregnancy (P01) accounted for 340 or 13.3% of perinatal deaths in 2012, compared to 330 or 12.9% in 2011.

(a) Perinatal deaths are all fetal deaths (at least 20 weeks' gestation or at least 400 grams birth weight) plus all neonatal deaths (death of a live born baby within 28 days of birth). See Glossary for further information.
(b) Data cells with small values have been randomly assigned to protect the confidentiality of individuals. As a result, some totals will not equal the sum of their components. Cells with a zero value have not been affected by confidentialisation.
(c) All causes of death data from 2006 onward are subject to a revisions process - once data for a reference year are 'final', they are no longer revised. Affected data in this table are: 2010 (final), 2011 (revised), 2012 (preliminary). See Explanatory Notes 29-33 and Technical Notes, Causes of Death Revisions, 2006 in Causes of Death, Australia, 2010 and Causes of Death Revisions, 2010 and 2011 in this publication.
(d) These data represent all perinatal deaths with a condition in the mother.
(e) The published neonatal count in this table differs from that previously published for 2011. See Explanatory Note 99 for further details.
